The distance between Cat Ba and Sapa is 500km. Not too long and not too short. Once Sapa does not have airport, the sleeping bus is the perfect choise. There are some companies that provide bus from Cat Ba to Sapa. However, most of them are transfer buses which means that passengers will travel from Cat Ba to Haiphong or Hanoi by seating bus and then change to sleeping bus in their way to Sapa. It makes the journey much longer and it contains many inconveniences and risks such as moving luggage up and down when changing bus, delays and even forgotten passengers.
There is only one company in Cat Ba that provides direct bus to Sapa, although the bus has few limitations such as no English speaking guides and many stops along the way to pick up another passengers. That’s why Cat Ba Discovery offers this bus which is best choise until today.
1. 15:00 – 15:30: Pick up passengers at hotels in Cat Ba Town.
2. The bus drives to the ferry terminal. Note: The bus drives onto the ferry, you do NOT need to carry your luggage off.
3. Travel via Highway 5B towards Hai Phong and Phu Tho.
4. Dinner Stop: Around 19:00, the bus stops at a rest station. You can buy dinner or snacks here.
5. Overnight Drive: The bus enters the Hanoi – Lao Cai Highway. Lights are dimmed for you to sleep.
6. 04:30 AM: Arrival at Sapa Bus Station (Dien Bien Phu Street).
7. You can stay on the bus to sleep until 06:00 AM if it is too cold outside, or take a taxi to your hotel immediately.
No English Guide: This is a local bus service. The driver and assistant speak limited English. However, they are used to tourists and know exactly where to drop you off.
Winding Roads: The last hour from Lao Cai to Sapa is very curvy. If you get carsick, please prepare medicine.
Early Arrival: Since you arrive very early (04:30 AM), we recommend booking a hotel that allows early luggage drop-off or has a 24/7 reception.
